Well Summer Is Officially Over

Some people mark the first day of the school year as the end of summer. That makes this week the end of summer. I know summer is over when all the news networks do their versions of the 'What Did Some County Fair Food Provider Deep Fry The Shit Out Of This Year?' story

Winner of “most creative dish” at the 7th Annual Big Tex Choice Awards, fried bubblegum isn’t actually gum — it’s a Chiclets-topped marshmallow infused with bubblegum extract — but according to creator Justin Martinez, it’s as close as you’re going to (or going to want to) get to the real deal.

Last year’s winners were Fried Beer and Texas Fried Fritos Pie. Who could forget?

This year’s finalists include Buffalo Chicken in a Flapjack, Deep Fried Pineapple Upside Down Cake — dreamed up and whipped up by the same guy who created Fried Butter — Deep Fried Texas Salsa, El Bananarito, Fried Autumn Pie, Fried Bubble Gum, Han’s Kraut Ball, and Walking Taco, not Dead Taco Walking.

Contestants vie in two categories: Best Taste and Most Creative. All eight will be available at the Fair, and the winners receive, according to a State Fair spokesperson, bragging rights, the spotlight’s glare, and a trophy that looks like the body of the Academy Awards’ Oscar with a Big Tex bobble-head.

Based on the descriptions — browned pork sausage, onion, garlic, sauerkraut, mustard, and seasonings covered with bread crumbs, and deep fried — I’m rooting for Hans. Fried Bubble Gum might just take the Most Creative category.

Fried bubble gum Should win that category! Unbelievable what people will cook and eat. When I was in the South one year we were at a fair. They had deep-fried Twinkies, ice cream and chocolate bars. Why?

My fave would be Wisconsin Cheese. Big gooey chunks of deep fried cheese...

I think the CNE was doing deep fried dill pickles. (ick!)

Our own local Fall Fair is mere weeks away and the only thing deep fried that I will be looking for is a bag those little donuts.
