I also have to go with ELO, The Cars, Pearl Jam, and Chaka Khan. No seriously. My number five would be J.Geils Band though I do loves me some Chaka.

I have said t before and I will say it again - if everyone all over the planet learned some choreography and decided on a time to do the steps to this song as one global flash mob then together we could fix this broken world

Joan Baez counts as "rock 'n roll"????

As much as Tupac does!

Here are my top 5:

Pearl Jam
Steppenwolf
Depeche Mode
Journey
Yes

The first three for me are no brainers. I think Journey gets the nod over the rest because several of their songs are simply iconic in our culture.

Now, I was never a Yes man, but they were the kings of progressive rock back in the day, so credit where credit is due.

Could easily see Janet Jackson or ELO taking this last slot, though.

And for those who are scratching their heads over why Steppenwolf (as if "Born to Be Wild" alone doesn't get them entrance), I give you the following from their song "Monster" which is as apt today as it was 40 years ago:

And though the past has its share of injustice
Kind was the spirit in many a way
But its protectors and friends have been sleeping
Now it's a monster and will not obey

The spirit that was freedom and justice
And its keepers seemed generous and kind
Its leaders were supposed to serve the country
But now they won't pay it no mind
Cause the people grew fat and got lazy
Now their vote is a meaningless joke
They babble about law and order
But it's all just an echo of what they've been told

Yeah, there's a monster on the loose
It's got our heads into the noose
And it just sits there watchin'

The cities have turned into jungles
And corruption is stranglin' the land
The police force is watching the people
And the people just can't understand
We don't know how to mind our own business
'Cause the whole world's got to be just like us
Now we are fighting a war over there
No matter who's the winner we can't pay the cost

'Cause there's a monster on the loose
It's got our heads into the noose
And it just sits there watchin'

America, where are you now?
Don't you care about your sons and daughters?
Don't you know we need you now
We can't fight alone against the monster

America...America...America...America...

Right on the nose jester. Lucky enough to see Steppenwolf twice back in the 60s. That song didn't get a lot of air time but one of their best songs. Pusher Man right up there too. Matter of fact, The Zombies, Yes, and Steppenwolf are my picks out of that list. ELO and Journey, probably, but the rest, I don't think so. The Rock n Roll Hall of Fame needs to go back to what the rock n roll hall of fame was supposed to represent. But then again, we have entered into the time of BS so what are you going to do. And Joan Baez is a legend but more in folk than rock.

Omg...my great comment got lost. I think they should rebrand this hall of fame as the POPULAR MUSIC hall of fame. There then is room for a Steppenworld and YES and Vanilla ice who had massive popular hits. It should be more van voting because this is the soundtrack of our lives. There needs to be a twenty year limit so those punks today have to stand the test of time and there is a lot of money to be made from us old foggies who remember vinyl. It's a win win for everyone. Rock and Roll is too narrow a term to emcompase all the music we know and love...

I dunno, if there can be a Jazz Hall of Fame (Tulsa), or a Hip Hop Hall of Fame (Harlem), or a Country Music Hall of Fame (Nashville)or an Opera Hall of Fame (Philadelphia), why can't we have a Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame that is just devoted to Rock music? And what's the definition of "popular"? A lot of influential bands do not qualify as "popular" because they didn't get airplay on the radio (think Sex Pistols, for example). I'm horrified by the prospect that they may someday induct such horrible crap like Kanye West and OutKast just because someone was foolish enough to think that horrendous noise deserved a Grammy -- ESPECIALLY, if they get in before far more deserving bands like the Cure, the Smiths, Thin Lizzy or the Guess Who (just to name a few)!

And Dr. G, I'm so jealous that you got to see John Kay and the boys back in their heyday! Younger folks don't know it, but "Steppenwolf's 16 Greatest Hits" (yes 16 songs on a SINGLE vinyl record! Unheard of at the time! even if it did require an edited version of Monster which is like 9 minutes long and hence why it didn't get a lot of airplay) was a staple in just about EVERYONE's record collection in the '70's. Songs like Born to Be Wild, Rock Me, and Magic Carpet Ride still get a fair amount of spin on the classic rock stations and in modern commercials and NFL station breaks, and songs like The Pusher, Monster, Snowblind Friend, and It's Never Too Late are just fantastic songs and social commentary that really holds up even today. Trust me, this is a VERY deserving band!

And Cal, Vanilla Ice? Seriously? His induction into the RnR HOF would be like taking a dump on Humphrey Bogart's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. SACRILEGE!! Even his most famous "song" was ripped off from Queen and Bowie. You might as well induct Milli Vanilli! I just cringe at the thought of Vanilla Ice or Kanye West or Eminem polluting the HOF the way they polluted radio and MTV. Ugh!! There's a reason why I pay through the nose for Sirius XM these days!

Vanilla had a song that was so catchy and of it's time that it's the creates one hit wonder ever. I stack him up with SWEET and MILLI VANILLI if they were real...but they were, kinda. But then where is Billy Idol? Where do you put 10,000 Maniacs. Remember there was a time when old people just didn't get Blinded by the Light by Manfred Man. Plus Kanye's stuff won't stand up 20 years from now.

2Pac is my number one pick. He was a rockstar in every sense of the word. He needs to be in the hall of fame.

I'm not really a fan for the rest of the acts in the list, but a case could be made for Pearl Jam. They were hugely influential and sparked several sound-alikes.

Rounding it out are Depeche Mode, Journey, and Janet Jackson - but only because I had to pick 5.

Ahh, sweet youth.

Maybe they SHOULD have a POP Music Hall of Fame for the bubble gum bands, Easy Listening and one hit wonders? But I'd like to keep that separate and preserve the integrity of Rock n' Roll before they do something ridiculous like nominate Disco Tex and the Sex-o-lettes (*shivers*) in the name of "diversity", musical or otherwise.

And I think Billy Idol and 10,000 Maniacs constitute Rock Music and both have a deserved claim to entry one day in their own right (especially Natalie and 10,000 Maniacs!). Tupac, on the other hand, may be a "rockstar" in a much different sense of the word than the most important one -- That shit just AIN'T rock music! But I'm sure he has a gold shrine already right next to Biggie in the Hip hop HOF, and trust me that there isn't ANYONE championing to have Led Zepplin inducted into there!

And simply because I have to keep screaming that the Emperor simply is not wearing any clothes until the fact gets acknowledged by everyone with EARS,Kanye's music doesn't hold up for 20 seconds after the first alleged note.

Cal's Canadian Cave of Coolness said...

Yeh, Kanye is pretty stinky. He doth protest so much. That's how you know. A gangster doesn't have to say he is one to anyone who will listen.

So the real question is What IS Rock and Roll. It's a bad term I still contend. Can't we unite the music and just all get along. I want Garbage in the HOF. I love their stuff and they do ROCK it out.

jester59388 said...

YES!! Shirley and Co. DEFINITELY should be there! Do they have 25 years yet? I'd vote for them!

And sorry all for the Kanye rants, but my hatred of him and his alleged "art" is equalled only by the unfathomable depths of my hatred for Rob Liefeld (as is my perplexity at their respective defenders/apologists/fans). Donald Trump is on a fast track for landing on that same list, too.
