Mondays With MJ

I know I say this every time, but the whole concept of Mary Jane Watson Parker as this buxom sexpot model who's devoted to Peter (and knows his identity) has just always been all wrong.

The original Peter Parker (from '62 Lee/Ditko, carrying through for the first ten years) was a masterpiece of characterization. He couldn't get a break; he couldn't make ends meet; he couldn't make anything work out. It made his actions as Spider-man even more heroic. It was a thrilling, heartbreaking, soulful story. All his girl problems were just great -- Betsey Brandt; Gwen Stacy; all of it. Once MJ showed up, yeah, she was pretty, and into him, but she was also a flake (and caused a lot of problems).

Once we got into the 'Seventies and the Romita art, Peter started changing into a conventionally good-looking kid, and MJ became pure fanservice, with that damn iconic image of her sitting around on the sofa in the Spider-Man t-shirt and jeans, drawn like a pinup, pining for him. It's just boring as hell and I hate it.

Maybe she adores people because she knows he is spiderman and she loves both of them, peter and spidey.
