These Are Called Gollywogs

They are racist, right? Or am I the only one that thought 'minstrels in blackface' when I first saw these things. Am I too sensitive? Is it my white guilt? I hope not because I am a champion for racial fairness and I think I am reasonable when I recognize racism or at least racial insensitivity. There are a billion other ways to design two stuffed characters who are twins apparently. Those two bananas in pjs did it to high shenanigans and great success. But two members of the Al Jolsen fan club? Um, I don't know. What could they do but commit drive-by shootings in immigrant neighborhoods? Do shows at a Vaudeville Revival theatre? Get the crap beat out of them on a regular by a junior soccer team made up exclusively of children of color. Okay that would happen in every episode if this thing turns out to be a cartoon series. I must do more research on these two HNs.

Someone says they are not racist because they are bears.
Do these look like BEARS to YOU?
What is their racist history?
Bears don't racist history.

I just learned that Wog is a derogatory term for a black person.
This isn't looking bad for these two tap dancing song and dance men.
If they are white entertainers in blackface.
Not cool.
Blackface Not Cool.

They aren't racist. They are only considered racist by liberals and overly PC people purely because they weren't made exclusively for little black children to play with. If they had been made with black children solely in mind, then it would be all a-ok. For instance - there are now Muslim dolls - but they are in no way considered racist. Why? Because they are made with Muslim children in mind.
If anything, I think they actually promote NON-racialism. At least little Jenny wasn't playing with all white dolls. And as for what someone else said, about how they have exaggerated features (i.e. big lips), I think they are depicted fairly accurately. Isn't it true that a lot of coloured people DO have larger lips? What did they expect, black skin and white features?

So what do you all say?
Racist or not?

I'm leaning toward racist. My opinion.

Cal, you have to check out Alan Moore's use of Gollywogs in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (if you haven't already). Starting, if I remember right, with the "Black Dossier."

I will check that out. The hole just goes deeper.
