Shaolin (2011)

I have a great love for historical Chinese epics, particularly if they a done in the native language. Most contain epic battles and historically accurate costumes and stunt work that is beyond fantastic. I knew that even though Jackie Chan was playing a cook and not a warrior, that we would get a ton of Jackie's custom playful stunt work here. He does not disappoint.

Lyrical and full of honor and nobility - this is an old fashion crowd pleaser of good vs evil. It's really got a 'Magnificent Seven' vibe to it. When the monks realize they have no other peaceful options left open to them, the lines between good and evil have never been more clearly drawn. These may be followers of the Buddha, but when their home is attacked you will see that Shaolin monks know how to handle their 'bidness'.

I really enjoyed this movie. Lots of good guys to root for a one real bad guy to hate. That Jackie Chan is a legend in two continents. I would love to see Andy Lau get more play in North American movies. I can see why he is a legend in China. He has all the skills of a Jet Li but he is the Chinese George Clooney. That's a killer combination.

I liked the way they tried to insert comedy with all the stuff about redemption and courage and honor but at times it felt like too much. I think you will enjoy this movie if you give yourself an intermission to reset your head.

The special effects and the action stunt work here is amongst the best you will ever see. Eastern filmmakers have this stuff down to a science and it's fun to watch good fight evil every time.

8/10

Were you a fan of Shogun? I only saw the movie once a long long time ago but the book was terrific.
