Hell, I remember before rotary phones when the operator had to connect you. Plus party lines!

Me too. Our phone number back in the 50s was East5-9970. It got changed to 325-9970 somewhere in the late 50s, early 60s. Big ole beautiful big black phone. Soon to be replaced with a turquoise one that I still have.

DrGoat, our phone number was 365-W and our neighbour on the party line was 365-J. Those were the days, boy.

I need to find and repost the story or my pink princess phone which I loved but was the condition to have the extra phone line put into the basement where I already had my own bathroom and shower. My mom didn't found a pink phone at a garage sale that was cheap and if I wanted a phone downstairs, that was the compromise. So great. You could make and take calls without the whole family hearing your conversations and your friends could do the same when they were over. Add to that a 13inch black and white TV that I won for selling the most magazine substriptions that got 12 channels of which one was French.

NO WONDER your basement was the original Cave of Cool! Every teenager's dream!

Those were the days indeed. I pine for those days. Wow Cal, you won a TV! Outstanding. We only had like 6 channels in the 50s-60s. One was channel 11 which had Chiller Theater....came on about 11 o'clock and showed all the Frankenstein, Dracula, Wolfman, Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman etc. movies. God I loved that time in my life.

I got lucky. All the single men in the barracks wanted their own paper so I kicked ass and made over 100 dollars with the 'pull cans' that had money inside them. And the TV and a Spider-man mirror. I made out like a bandit that day and delivering those papers was easy...like in an apartment. And they always gave me a tip because I collected on Friday night. I could have gotten a case of beer with all the free beers I got offered at age 12.
