The Original Moody Bad Boy Of Literature

Clare Leighton, English (1898-1989).

'Heathcliff in the Snow' (Wood Engraving-1930) from 'Wuthering Heights' by Emily Bronte.

I remember how all the boys in the class universally hated Wuthering Heights but not me. I dug the whole gloomy vibe where it was always rainy and people treated each other in horrible ways in a horrible cold place without any hope. It was the feel good story of my teen life.

The old Wuthering Heights movie with Laurence Olivier was on the classics channel a few days ago, so I watched the last half again. Yup, moody bad boy and a bitch -- the old, old story.

she hurt him by marrying a goof so he went and got rich, bought her home and turned her insane. the classic boy meets girl boy drives girl crazy by being a dick kind of story.

Oh and her ghost comes back to torment him. I am kinda glad he never met another girl in his entire life because he would have killed her too.

A place where "it was always rainy and people treated each other in horrible ways in a horrible cold place without any hope" - in other words, England...

I laughed out loud at that one.
