Riddle Me This
Does the reveal of this great movie moment work better if you start the kids watching from 'Star Wars - New Hope' or from 'Phantom Menace'? I think you kinda GET IT by movie FIVE if you watch from the beginning. But TWO movies in? Pretty fantastic reveal.

Oh, A New Hope, definitely. The prequels would've already spoiled the fact that Anakin fathered Luke and Leia so when he got to ANH the kid would be going, "wait, so Darth Vader is threatening his daughter and his son just happens to be on that planet right under their ship?"
Hey, Cal, if you haven't seen the Mr. Plinkett Star Wars reviews, you gotta check'em out. He's also done detailed takedowns of the 2009 and TNG Star Trek movies, but his epic 90 minute long deconstructions of the prequel movies are just absolutely hysterical to watch and should be required viewing for all SW nerds w/ internet access. He uses this screen persona that is an homage to Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs; and it juxtaposes perfectly against his actual substance b/c he makes all these incisive points that an erudite filmmaker would level against the prequels. It completely reaffirms our Original Trilogy love.
Great video. I remember being shocked when Vader said that. It was so cool.
That is the expression everyone wore in the theater when we watched that moment for the first time.
I was fortunate enough to be able to try this both ways. When David was three, I introduced him to Star Wars starting with Phantom Menace. He loved it at first, but got bored by the time we hit the original movie. Except for a couple of creatures, he was disinterested in the new characters and we didn't even make it all the way through Empire.
By the time he was eight though, he'd forgotten his first experience and I tried again, this time starting with the original trilogy. Not only did he have a reaction similar to the kid in the video, he loved the entire trilogy and was excited to get the back story from the prequels. He was able to enjoy both trilogies that way.
My advice to everyone is always to start with the originals.
There is no way that the 'moment' would be preserved today with all the spoilers out there on the NET with every movie released. I remember that Star Wars itself came onto the scene with NO pre hype. Those were good times.
I wish I had a kid. For every geek out there this is the moment and the reaction that you want to see.
