New Japanese Trailer Shows SHIELD Helicarrier

One of my all time favorite pieces of comic book hardware is the flying aircraft carrier that is the headquarters of the SHIELD spy agency headed by Nick Fury. To see that boat take to the air in the trailer filled me with girlish glee and I have already pre-ordered the toy. It looks like they are throwing everything into 'The Avengers' and I for one appreciate the effort and the quality of the translation. No one can fault them for the beautiful LOOK of this film. I hope the story lives up to the hype.

Marvel Studios presents in association with Paramount Pictures "Marvel's The Avengers"--the Super Hero team up of a lifetime, featuring iconic Marvel Super Heroes Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, Director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins. Starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson, and directed by Joss Whedon, "Marvel's The Avengers" is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series "The Avengers," first published in 1963 and a comics institution ever since. Prepare yourself for an exciting event movie, packed with action and spectacular special effects, when "Marvel's The Avengers" assemble in summer 2012. In "Marvel's The Avengers," superheroes team up to pull the world back from the brink of disaster when an unexpected enemy threatens global security.

Yeah, The Helicarrier is cool and I let out a little ''squee" when I saw it in the trailer, but it seems that every story I ever see it in involves in falling out of the sky and crashing. Clearly it was designed by SHIELDs "Awesome But Impractical" Division.

Oh it's totally impractical. I loved the way Steranko would draw it. Nothing like that would never work. It would fall from the sky and land on a day care center the first day in the air. But I totally love the idea behind a flying carrier.

I hope we never know that it can fly until it actually does. I would love to be a kid in the audience who was Avengers ignorant on the first day of the film. Then I would have a reason for yelling out to my Dad..."You mean the fucking boat FLIES TOO!?!

I liked the original, bulbous Jack Kirby helicarrier. There's a fantastic Bill Sienkiewicz drawing of it silhouetted against a hazy sunrise (and surrounded by all those tiny little aircraft, as usual) in Elektra Assassin.

There are many similar examples where it just shows up in the sky and I always get a smile n my face because they don't brink the Helicarrier to a situation unless the shit has REALLY hit the fan. It's not a cruise ship and they don't like to show it off to the civilians.
