Last Resort - First Look

Last Resort was created by Shawn Ryan (The Shield) and stars Andre Braugher (Homicide: Life on the Street) and Scott Speedman (Felicity) as two Navy officers who refuse a mysterious order to fire missiles at Pakistan, making their submarine an enemy of the state.

After the rogue officers refuse their orders and are officially on the run from the U.S. government, they set up camp on the island of Sainte Marina and stand their ground. The series looks like it’ll dabble a little bit in politics, a little bit in emotion, and a lot in explosions and tactical situations.

Many networks have released their premieres early online to keep them from getting lost in the pile of new shows. I might have avoided this one because I thought there was no way the show could live up to it's outrageous premise but surprisingly it did. I was riveted to the screen right from the beginning. I can't wait to see what happens next.

I was impressed at how many interesting character arcs they were able to introduce in a lean 44 minutes. I want answers but the creators wisely left me in confusion. I hope that means many more surprises ahead. In a way I feel the same way I did when Lost first premiered. I don't know who is telling the truth and I can't trust anyone to make the right decisions in the crisis situation the characters have found themselves in. Last Resort is very compelling television.

Andre Braugher is fantastic as the Captain of the submarine Colorado and his final speech to the world sent a chill down my spine. Any program that can do that, gets my time and attention. You can watch the pilot for yourself at ABC.com.
