Currently Playing At The Bijou Of Cool

Such a lost little gem. The best thing Broderick has ever done and I am including Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Yeh, I said it. The whole machinery of storytelling that is going on her is so subtle and so sweet that you can be forgiven for not putting it all together until the end. You care so much about the characters that you are totally invested in their success and happiness. When is the last time a movie actually made you feel GOOD about humanity - while laughing your ass off?

"Buoyed by the charm of Matthew Broderick in the title role and Marlon Brando as a caricature of his Godfather persona, The Freshman benefits from solid casting, a clever premise, and sweet humor."

Maximilian Schell as Larry London, a chef best know for cooking dishes made from extinct species is only one of several funny players in this whole operation. He is crazy and bizarre and every second he is on screen I am laughing. Schell looks like he is having a ball playing his part which totally is against the kind of controlled characters he is used to portraying.

And how is that Marlon Brando? At the same time to is mocking and playing homage to his greatest role ever. Carlo Sabatini is a real guy and Brando finds the heart in the character and for ONCE is actually in on the joke. If you are a huge fan of The Godfather this film is just that much better when you understand all the references.

"Is that a picture of Mussolini?"

"Well it ain't Tony Bennett."

I hope you do and then tell me what a genius recommendation I gave you.

Ever seen Crossing Delancy? Another great movie from around the same time.

So glad you like this! I barely know anyone who's even seen it. I've always thought it was great.

And Crossing Delancey! (I've got to spell the streets of my town right.) Great movie.

"Poetry?"
"Pickles."

And how about that Bubby? She should have taken the best actress Oscar.
