I Got Me Some Gun Stress. I Never Have Gun Stress

I would love to hear ONE story where someone with a gun carry permit stops a mass killer like the one who attacked a theatre in Colorado. I thought one of the strongest arguements AGAINST gun control was that someone WOULD have stepped up if everyone was allowed to carry a gun. Why does that NEVER  happen? I think I would feel better about guns if they actually helped a situation instead of causing more carnage.

Now at the same time I love the designs of thse handguns. I am a complicated fellow.

The tough ones dont carry guns...they dont need them to feel strong.
Those who do carry them do so to make themselves feel strong, when the shooting starts they suddenly remember that they're cowards and run away...
Get rid of the damn guns...

Tempo has a point. I live in Tucson, which is full of guns. You can carry concealed in this state without a permit, yet the Gabby Giffords shooting still happened. The combination of events and circumstances would have to be perfect for someone with a concealed weapon to be in the position (and have the balls) to stop one of these shootings. Nice Tiffany guns by the way.

If only someone else had a gun...

1) Cal, I think you meant to type "argument AGAINST gun control," not "argument FOR gun control."

2) There apparently are such examples, cherry-picked by pro-gun people. I am anti-gun and pro-gun control to the extreme. I'm pointing this out not because I support guns or buy their asinine arguments but because those of us trying to stop the gun madness need to be aware of all the counterarguments.

I don't think it would help too much for other people to have guns when the shooter has a bullet-proof vest.

Hey Cal! Long time no annoy :) Work has been kicking my ass lately so I've not been able to post to my own blog much less spend time on anyone elses. I miss visiting here, pal.

Mushy stuff aside... A quick response to your question:

Everyone WASN'T "allowed" to carry a gun in the theater that night. In fact NO ONE was "allowed" to carry a gun in the theater that night.

The State of Colorado allows businesses to ban the possession of guns by their patrons. All they have to do is put up a sign... which Cinemark does. Cinemark's policy is for guns to be allowed in the possession of Law Enforcement personnel only.

So what you end up with is a wonderful "gun free" zone that is honored by law abiding people and completely ignored by murderous bastards like this guy. Which pretty much ends up being the case in most gun control schemes, IMO.

Cal, I don't know that I (or anyone else) legally armed in the theater that night could have stopped him. Maybe, maybe not. We'll never know - because the patrons were denied the opportunity to defend themselves.

Nathan - Body Armor doesn't protect quite like it's portrayed to in the movies and on TV. Most Kevlar based products will deform when struck by a bullet and, while it's intended to stop penetration, there is still the transfer of energy when a round hits. This can be quite painful and cause damage to the wearer - even if it doesn't kill them.

For example, the gun I carry most frequently now is a .357 magnum. A round fired from my gun is zipping along at something over 1200 feet per second and whops a bit over 500 foot lbs. of energy. That hurts a lot, even if you're wearing body armor. It would take one tough SOB to put up with getting hit more than once.

Dr Goat- I actually agree :) It would have to be a "right place/right time/right person" situation for an armed private citizen to turn the tide at such an event as a mass shooting. And it would take sizeable cajones.

But that's not their job. I don't carry a gun because I want to be a vigilante, or a hero, or a cop. I carry a gun because there are people in the world that will hurt you and kill you if given the chance. There are people in the world that will hurt and kill your family and others that you love if given the chance. That's the cold hard truth of the world.

I carry a gun because I don't see the moral benefit to denying myself and my loved ones every chance at going home safe at the end of the day.
