And Knowing Is Half The Battle

IF you've ever wondered what to do if you get stuck outside during a storm, here is the official guide on how to not get struck by lightning.

Headline from the local newspaper in Cairns, Australia where my sister and her family lives. HOW do people live in a place where such knowledge is necessary for one's survival? EVERYTHING wants to kill the people who live there. The snakes the frogs, the kangaroos, the bats, the bugs, the sea creatures and now even the air itself is out choosing victims.

Lightning strikes over Liverpool in Sydney. The SES advises people not to speak on landline phones as the current can travel through lines.

Don't speak on the phone because you might get electrocuted??? What's next? I might as well hide in an abandoned refrigerator in the back yard for all the good it will do me. If there is lighting every night, thousands of strikes an hour, the odds that someone is going to get flash barbecued goes up with each passing minute.

WHAT TO REMEMBER IN A LIGHTNING STORM

• Avoid the outdoors if possible
• Don’t shelter under a tree
• Don’t stand near a street light or similar tall object
• Don’t carry an umbrella
• Don’t play golf
• Don’t use a landline phone or have a shower
• If stuck in an open space, lie on the ground

Have you never been told not to talk on the phone during a lightning storm? Man, that was Rule One on the prairies when I was a kid. How did you survive to adulthood?

I used a plastic pink princess phone. Not one made of airplane aluminum.
