This just reminds me how much of a glaring hole I have in my genre TV knowledge. I know me some 'Torchwood' but I know next to nothing about Dr. Who. It was the PBS show that came on AFTER 'Star Trek' and 'Monty Python' when I was a kid and I always feel asleep part way through it. I have always felt guilty that I can't even BLUFF my way through a discussion with a Dr. Who fan. So tell me where to start with all the new stuff. I don't want to go back to the beginning but I want to see some of the cooler episodes, doctors and companions of recent times. What do I need to download. Names, numbers and seasons please.

I don't have statistics as to episode number, etc, and it's hardly a typical episode but you need to get hold of the episode called BLINK. I think it was in David Tennant's second season, thus the third season of the new DR WHO.
BLINK stands alone as just excellent sci-fi and actually stars (NOT just guest stars) actress Carey Mulligan who was Michael Douglas's daughter, I believe, in the recent WALL STREET sequel. I've watched it half a dozen times and enjoy it more every time.
Geeze! I'm a huge WHO fan - both old and new but as for where to start...... I would start with the older stuff-- but that puts a lot of folks off who can't deal with low budget SF. Not that I think it would put YOU off but for most modern audiences it creates a barrier they just don't want to even try to cross. Of the new stuff I would say dive in and just swim forward. DAMN! This is the kind of conversation we should be having face to face but you live in a sane country. I'll try to think of more/better suggestions when I have more time.
Sorry to put you on the spot Rod. What I really want is a cool story that will make me go 'WOW' at the end and tell me all I need to know about WHO this guy is and why he is so cool and why his companion is so important to him (despite just being a story device as a virgin set of eyes to the Doctor's adventures) Should we even call him Doctor. Does he practice medicine or is he more of a PHD? These are things I have to know.
Start with the first episode of the new series. It's called ROSE and the Doctor is played by Christopher Eccleston.
You'll pick up everything that's important from that point on, you will be introduced to Captain Jack and learn the history of the Torchwood organization and there will be just enough stuff from the old series that you'll get a sense of the backstory.

Anything with Jon Pertwee as the Third Doctor, starting with "Spearhead From Space".
For the current series go with the "Empty Child" and it's second part "The Doctor Dances" Christopher Eccleston plays the Ninth Doctor.
The scene where (blonde, supposedly former Doctor Who wife, woman holding the revolver) which episode was that, I just recently went through Matt Smiths firts season as the DR, but didn't see that.
I am with M.D. All those were fun and get your feet wet. Since it was a re-boot of Dr. Who you find out most of the background stuff.

I would say watch the whole first season with Christopher as Dr. Who. It has a good overarching story line and great chemistry.
Kal I am a huge Dr Who fan. Massive. I even own my own full-size dalek. This show is iconic and I must agree with all the posting every one has put up here. However rather than rushing at some of excellent episodes like "Girl in the Fireplace" or "Blink" start with the first episode of the new lot - "Rose" then work your way through. Once you've got yourself to the final episode then you'll feel a need to go back in time and watch the earlier stuff. The new stuff will tell you everything you need to know about the doctor and more. I love this show and everything about it. Jump in, the water is warm and deep...
I have always felt bad about not getting more into Dr. Who. I am very encouraged however by everyone's support on this one. It's a good investment of my time I think. "Children of the Earth" and the Torchwood series that I watched after that was the best series of shows I watched last year and I hear the same creators are involved and the 'Who' stuff is even better. I have 'Rose' in the slot and ready to go.
