They Have To Start Making These Quizes Harder

Y'know, I really enjoy your blog...I really do. Its fun, whimsical even, with a touch of creative melancholy. But, and I mean no disrespect and you probably don't care, the pro-life movement is not "against" women, it is pro-child. I'm not going to rant here, but comparing anyone to the Taliban is offensive.

Take it for what its worth.

Michael, Cal really doesn't know any better. I feel bad for those he hurts.

Maybe we need to expand Godwin's Law so that it is more contemporary? After all, Nazis are so 1990.

I've never understood the pride people take in building a man of straw and then kicking its ass.

If the pro-life movement cared as much about the children when they were OUTSIDE the womb I could have more respect for you POV. People who live in glass houses.

Fuck you David. Stop deminishing my opinions which I always base on the ACTIONS of others which I oppose. Stop refusing to see your side for being assholes in this area, which they are.

Don't use my site for a forum and if you don't like my opinion then go and don't come back. Or make up your own blog and rant away all you life.

You get the good with the bad here and if you hate a part of me then you must hate all of me and I have no time for you.

And these stupid Republican have at one time or another suggested all these measures for American Woman...some have even passed in their state houses so yeh, I am the one making the shit up. Take your teeth of the table and put them back into your mouth and run home to your shack in the hills ya goobers.

Some of the pro-life movement does. The problem with the world in general is that the stink is lumped in with the assholes...and that's if you are Republican or Democrat, Conservative or Liberal, labels only get you so far. We have a congress (and Presidents) that exempt themselves from the laws they pass for the rest of us. Politicians as a whole are crooks...

And I don't think I ever insulted or disrespected you...

I try to be kind to all, even those I disagree with.

Anyway, still like the majority of your blog.

But again, if you actually believe that LIFE begins at conception, and every life matters then you understand the reasoning behind any legislation that bans any sort of abortion.

There are some people out there that do care about all life, before and after birth.

But again, its your opinion, your blog. I don't plan on going anywhere.

I never have understood how they can be against birth control, free condoms and sex education and also be against abortions. When teens have sex education, abortion is cut in half. I just read those statistics this year.

I can't believe those ideas on that list. I wish Christians would preach love and Jesus and leave the government laws alone. Jesus never said a word against the Roman government and their laws.

Abortion as birth control is disgusting and wrong, but there are times it useful and in fact, needed. It's a legitimate medical tool when used positively.
My own personal view is that abortion is to be avoided where possible.

I think the Catholic Church wants in on that action too.

Belle - I can't speak for "They", but I can tell you my thinking on the matter.

I don't oppose sex education. I think every parent should be frank and forthcoming with information about the facts of life - and the risks involved in each approach to navigating those waters. As a parent, I took responsibility for teaching my kid. I'm less enthused about turning that responsibility over to someone outside my family.

I know... I know. Many Parents aren't being responsible and teaching their kids this stuff. Some see that as a call for Government to step in, and I can sort of see their point. Its just hard for me to see the benefit of turning over something so vital to a group of people that pretty much fuck up everything they touch, you know?

I don't oppose contraception. I don't want to pay for someone else's contraception, though. Condoms and other birth control methods are not "free". I believe in personal responsibility. I know it seems like an outdated concept... but I think that many of the problems we have today have the lack of personal responsibility at their root. We should be responsible ourselves, and encourage others to be responsible by not making it easy and painless for them to not be.

If you have a link to a study that shows a reduction, by half, of abortions due to sex education I'd love to see it. Maybe we could make New York aware of it, too. New York regularly clocks in well over 80,000 abortions every year.

We get the society we earn.

Okay, after looking around I remembered it was teen pregnancy and abortions. Anyway, here is one article about it although not the original one I read since I can't remember where I saw it. This article says 36.9%

"Better access to contraception, higher quality sex education and shifting social norms have contributed to a 36.9 per cent decline in Canada's teen birth and abortion rate between 1996 and 2006, according to a report released today by the Sex Information and Education Council of Canada."
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/parenting/canadas-teen-birth-and-abortion-rate-drops-by-369-per-cent/article571685/

I doubt a teenager has the money to buy contraceptives. Would you rather she get pregnant and then abort? Personal responsibility is not a teenager's strength.

My three teenage granddaughters were taught sex education in school and so far have not become a madam in a brothel. In fact, they hardly ever date (even though they are asked) and are excelling in high school and college.

Pay for contraception now or pay for a child for the next 18 years and beyond. Watch any episode of teen mom and you will scream at the TV at these girls who squandered their potential on a fairy tale that no one in their lives (not teachers or parents) tood the time to dispel before the deed was done. I hate to see abortions occuring but I also hate to see children raised poor by uneducation mothers who only perpetuate a cycle of poverty and bad decision making. This is how we get a Honey Boo Boo.

Belle - Thanks for the link! Very interesting study. Lots to think about. Like I said, I'm not opposed to giving all our kids the information they need - all of it. I just want to control that presentation as much as possible since the child involved is my responsibility.

One think jumped out at me from the article regarding Sweden's increase in abortion rates:

"It's not that young women are viewing abortion as a form of birth control. Rather they do view it as an acceptable - although regrettable - way of dealing with an unwanted pregnancy when it occurs."

I think this is something we should discourage as a society. I don't necessarily think it can be done legislatively... and I don't think the answer is forbidding schools to teach sex ed. I do think that such a mindset (Oh well, I'll just get an abortion) is the key to why there are atrociously high rates in places like New York.

The current trend toward seeing any "judgement" of abortion on demand as a "war on women" sure makes the issue hard to address. Hard to discuss it if you can't discuss it, you know?

I know kids can't (and often won't) buy their own contraception. Parents need to do their jobs and we should do a better job as a people encouraging them to do so. I would imagine that your own kid's success in this area has less to do with the sex ed they received in school and more to do with the good job you do as a parent.

Cal - True. But then again, I think the whole safety net itself can often encourage reckless behavior.

Its a hard area to navigate, isn't it? On the one hand you and I both don't want the unplanned babies to suffer. On the other, you have to wonder if we would have as many unplanned babies if it wasn't seen as accepted and normal. Removal of consequences for ones actions (societal or legal) encourages bad decisions, imo.

We don't banish pregnant teens to the countryside because we're ashamed of them anymore. I don't think we should go back to that. I also don't think we should glamorize it on national TV and magazine covers, though.
