What I Have Never Understood About The Avengers

Why doesn't Tony just create a whole army of Iron Man robots to do the jobs that he can't do by himself? Also everytime I see the NON-superpowered heroes on the team like Hawkeye and Black Widow, I worry about their safety. Can't they have customized armor too? After all they are often in harms way against more powerful forces. I have read a few 'What If?' stories that take that concept but nothing from the main titles that Iron Man appears in.

I've never understood their tagline "Earth's Mightiest Heroes". Back in '63 when they were first founded they were made up of a group of characters who at the time, weren't even popular enough to have their own solo titles.

The team has become a magnet for second stringers over the years like Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, etc and made them into mainstays, its seems that at the time the Avengers were less of "the big leagues" and more like a stepping stone. As if to say "hey newbie, join our team and if you're lucky, you might get a cameo in a future issue of Fantastic Four."

I always hated that Spider-Man was never thought of being an Avenger despite the fact that he is the perfect type of hero for that team - he's also 'misunderstood' like Hawkeye or the mutants who have been on the time like you mentioned. When he recently joined the team it was such a no-brainer.

I can't help but wonder how they'll justify Hawkeye and Black Widow being on the team in the movie. They are pretty weak power-wise compared to the others. I hope they find a way to make it seem reasonable, as I really want to like the movie.

I have that exact same feeling about them when I saw the trailer. One punch to the face and they are dead.

I think they're Justified because they both have extensive military training.

Black Widow was the obvious choice for Avengers Smurfette on the grounds that she can get away with punching and kicking people and doing "action girl" stuff, unlike other mainstays like Wasp or Scarlet Witch who fight with powers were they don't have to directly grapple with their opponents.
