'Vikings' Gets A Second Season

I am a huge fan of this show. The evil machination of Gabriel's Byrne's Earl Haraldson are fun to watch. Any Chieftain that has to ask a Soothsayer if the God's really exist is a guy with issues. When he gets his, it's gonna be sweet. The way he treats friend, family and foe as disposable is frightening. That kind of power always corrupts regardless of the time or place. It's just a predictable part of human civilization.

I am so involved with this Viking family of Ragnar Lothbrok that I will die myself if any of them comes to permanent harm. And that is only five episodes into their story. Ragnar has a fierce intelligence and a quick smile that disguises his ambitions. He is not content to just accept his lot in life.

Beside him he has a powerful ally and partner in Lagertha the Shield Maiden. From the first moment you meet her you immediately understand why Ragnar would choose her as his wife. She is a magnificent creature and a match for most any man in her culture. She is the power that holds Ragnar's family together.

The scenes with Ragnar and his teen son Bjorn are fantastic. The kid is a chip off the old block. Because of his youth he has an inability to hide his contempt for others and their stupidity because of his youth. I can see Bjorn growing into a great Viking Chieftain, if he can survive his families troubles long enough to get to that age.

Bjorn's sister is Gyda. She seems so fragile against the violent backdrop of her life. I fear for her safety the most. She is smart and brave. I hope those qualities continue to save her.

The fight choreography is historical accurate and thrilling to watch. I have never seen a fight between 20 guys on one side and 20 on the other be MORE interesting and exciting than any million man battles that computer effects can produce. You will see that the vicious, murderous reputation of the Viking warrior is well deserved.

Like 'Hell on Wheels' the environment is as huge a character in Vikings as the live actors. You know that the cast and crew committed to living in the sets that the production created. It's like a historical recreation complete with animals and the smells, and sites and sounds of village life. This is the kind of program that rewards those who pay attention. So many cool little details.

The best news released today is that the History Channel (once only the home to Alien Nazis Conspiracy Specials) has committed to a second 10 episode season of this story of a visionary Viking hero, his family and allies.

Who would have imagined that the History Channel would have a scripted a show rated in the top five shows on TV? Obviously, I have been out of the loop. I have seen commercials for the show Vikings, but I figured it would be a flash in the pan and then I would be out of luck. Well, it looks like Vikings isn’t getting Firefly’d after all.

Vikings follows the adventures of Ragnar Lothbrok the greatest hero of his age. The series tells the sagas of Ragnar's band of Viking brothers and his family, as he rises to become King of the Viking tribes. As well as being a fearless warrior, Ragnar embodies the Norse traditions of devotion to the gods, legend has it that he was a direct descendant of Odin, the god of war and warriors.
