Because being from Kenya and being Muslim didn't work for the America of the 1970s. Plus all those pictures he took with members of the Black Panthers didn't endear him to the white audiences of the time. His progressive ideas were decades ahead of their time but so was his love for white women. The tabloids would have a field day with him today.
