What Is The Point, DC Comics?

Could Superman be gay?

Honchos at Superman's comic book home, DC Comics, said this weekend that one of their most identifiable (but as of yet unnamed) straight characters will soon be coming out of the closet, according to a report.

At the Kapow Comic Convention held last weekend in London, DC co-publisher Dan DiDio said the publisher would be reintroducing a previously existing character who would now be “one of our most prominent gay characters," the website reports.

Didio said DC's position had shifted on the subject since he said in an interview last year that any homosexual characters would be new introductions, and that none of their existing characters' sexual orientations would shift.

DC vice president Bob Wayne likened DC's change in tune to President Obama's shift on gay marriage, explaining that DC's policy “has evolved,” the report says.

"Oh Lois. He only wants the one thing you haven't got."

What is gayer than wearing a cape with boots over a skin tight bodysuit? I thought everyone in comic book universes were asexual. They also never went to the toilet, or slept, or ate, or just took a moment to reason with someone before everything gets violent. But what do you expect from a bunch of drag queens?

How will this suddenly OUT character act any differently than they already had? Will there no longer be group showers held in the Justice League's Watchtower? Will this character get caught staring at the Flash's bum during brunch and then have to spend the rest of the day avoiding running into the speedster? Is this what action/adventure storytelling has become?

It's like the kid in your Jr high class who you find out came out as gay as an adult - and it doesn't surprise you one damn bit because you always knew the truth anyways and it MADE NO DIFFERENCE.

This just seems like another bad decision made at DC to garner attention for themselves. I wish their comics were good enough to gather that notice but they just aren't these days. It must kill them to see the success of Marvel's Avengers and know that they have no idea how to make their own live action Justice League film.

Why is everyone assuming it will be a male character? Why can't we have a female character stand up and declare her love for both Catwoman AND her pussy? I certainly have done that enough times over the years.

Way to jump on a controversial bandwagon about 20 years too late to make any real impact. Thanks for your cynical exploitation of acceptance. Now fuck off, DC Comics.

Using a "Preexisting" who will (if all goes to plan) be "prominent".

Sounds like their way of saying "We can get this C-Lister to be an A-lister, if we can somehow get the attention of the mainstream media."

Honestly, I'm so far behind on what goes on in the DC World with the reboot that I don't even really care all that much.

What makes you think it will be a male superhero? I vote for Wonder Woman. Wanna bet a fiver on it?

Well, I think Batman had better let Dick Grayson know before he comes out. It's only fair.

Oh, come on! Who else could it be? He and his "ward" have been dodging the rumors for decades! He and his bondage, S&M gear, beating up on obvious queens like the Joker with such self loathing... Who else could it be?

I'm pretty certain, since Vibe is being reintroduced into the comics... And how irrelevant of a character he was before... That he will now be the most prominent gay character of the DCU, as that gives him a reason for existing again... I also think they might do the same with Atom Ryan Choi as he's a relatively new character that could really use some defining characteristic... And with DC's previous attitude of "there can be only 1 (except for GL)" with every character they had, it wouldn't surprise me if making Ryan the "gay Atom" would allow for Ray Palmer to don an outfit and become the "straight Atom" in some stupid move...

On a side note, it might actually be neat to have both Vibe and Ryan as a gay couple as DC usually skirts around their gay characters having a long time partner and not be longing after a lost love (IE Batwoman and Renee Montoya... yes, BW has been seeing Maggie Sawyer, but for how long?)

Knowing DC it'll be Captain Marvel aka SHAZAM!
I don't see the point, just DC trying to sell more funny books, bit of a insult to the whole Gay Lesbian community.

It's just tossing a bone to a community they hope to look squeeze a few of those gay dollars from. It cheap and irrelevant and will only produce more backlash than it's worth.

Why are they worried anyway. They will kill off the gay guy anyways in about six months when they tire of him.

DrNobody - you are so right about Batwoman - wasn't she gay from her latest inception.

I hate what DC has become lately. I used to argue how much more interesting they were than Marvel, as the characters were more iconic than marvel, though both have their problems. But now that dc is doing the new 52 and totally screwing up their continuity yet again. I stopped collecting comics alltogether this feels like more of the same. my vote is for Jason Todd, after all big enough deal, but very little actual impact.

The gay news site is reporting that the gay character will be the original Green Lantern. (Is there a subsequent one? I'm not in the know.)

Anyway, good thing you didn't take me up on that $5 bet.
