Rae Johnson Says This Better Than I Ever Could

At the age of 75, the Amazonian Warrior Demi-Goddess and founding member of the Justice League is hitting the big screen for the very first time - in less than a month. Wonder Woman is finally getting a movie, and the trailers we have seen look fantastic.

So, like any upcoming superhero movie, here we are expecting to be swamped with teasers, behind the scenes footage, interviews, merchandise, advertising, magazine covers, talk show appearances - except that's not what is happening at all.

There's a makeup line (available only in the US), a Dr Pepper campaign, and last year we got a Snapchat filter. Not what anyone would call overwhelming support for one of the biggest superheroes in history.

These TV spots are a nice start. I like the way they represented the same footage that we have already seen. I am totally jazzed for this one.

Yes, that's a great article and I couldn't agree more. The shabby one-note treatment of WW mirrors how women are marginalized and still largely valued only for their looks in our society.

You would think people would wise up but they just never do. Woman are the only thing holding this planet together which is why they always get my total respect.

The comments to that article are just horrifying and make me ashamed to be male. Nuff said.

I agree with Rae that I fear the poor marketing may doom the box office numbers resulting in a self-fulfilling prophecy. "We didn't spend much to market it because female-led superhero films and comics are certain to fail." And then, when it fails due to lack of marketing, they can pat themselves on the back for being "right" and justify not making another. Which would be a tremendous shame.

I REALLY want this to over-the-top succeed. C'mon DC and Warner Bros., get your heads out of your asses! This could be HUGE! and revitalize your flagging cinemaverse! You do realize people only went to BvS: DoJ to see Wonder Woman, right? And the only reason anyone sat through Suicide Squad was Margot Robbie, right? No one gave a shit about Jared Leto or Will Smith. Market this at least to the same extent you're marketing "King Arthur" for Chrissake! It's friggin' everywhere!

Maybe we'll get lucky. The studios thought Deadpool wasn't worth making; they thought Johnny Depp's portrayal as Captain Jack Sparrow in the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie was too over the top. Audiences proved them wrong. Let's hope that happens again.

This will build slowly but be very influencial. It's got the feeling of the first Captain America movie and I take that as a good sign. It's too bad the way marketers forget half their purchase base when this should be an easy layup.
