I Loves Me Some Johnny Clegg

I was really into this guy's music in University. Great stuff. I loved my political music in the 80s and Apartheid was bullshit right from the start. To this day I STILL won't play Sun City. (If you get that reference then you are my people) Johnny Clegg was a strong advocate for black South Africans and lived in the Townships, learned their customs and traditions and music. Despite being born in England he will always be African. I admire people who speak their truth and live their truth and Johnny is the model for that kind of enlightened citizen of the World. He is often called the White Zulu.

I have to look to see if this final show is on film

Jonathan "Johnny" Clegg OBE OIS is a South African musician and anthropologist who has recorded and performed with his bands Juluka and Savuka, and more recently as a solo act, occasionally reuniting with his earlier band partners. Sometimes called Le Zoulou Blanc, he is an important figure in South African popular music history, with songs that mix Zulu with English lyrics and African with various Western music styles.

Hey, what is Morgan Freeman doing at a Johnny Clegg concert?

My favorite song of his is this one. I actually can pronounce all the words but I have no idea what they mean. I want to meet a Zulu person and impress them with my knowledge.

I heard it there too. Damn. I am finally the age where I listen to CBC radio. I never thought those days would come.

I bought one of his T-shirts at a thrift shop last year. It says Johnny Clegg Human Tour and gives a list of all the cities he played in. When I bought it for 1.50$, I had no idea who he was. Just liked the cool primitive totem on the front.

Yeah, Cal, once you start listening to CBC One, you're officially old.
