The Man In The High Castle Episodes 1 And 2

Just when Trump is rockin' and rollin' I come across the story of an American gone Nazi. Based on the novel of Philip K. Dick. it's a weird look at a future 'what if'?' where a film is found - a film that shows that our side DID win the war, NOT the Nazis or the Japanese as this film depicts. If I know Dick there will be a trippy reason why a film like that could possibly exist in this world.

 

The world is a terrifying place of oppression and subjugation of anyone different. The lame and elderly are burned daily in some places where their ashes fall over the town they once lived in. That is cold. Damn cold.

 

So while our heroine Julianna travels the country with the film that could unravel this whole world, she teams up with the ONE guy she should avoid, an undercover Nazi agent. To make things worse for her, the film was given to her by her now dead sister. Dick is laying it on a bit thick me thinks.

People don't know about Bibles or American history or how things where before WWII ended. They have forgotten how to make America great again,  The whole thing looks set in 1950 with the crappy TV and Nazi propaganda before all movies. It's a world where everyone spies on everyone else and you can feel a dark cloud that hangs over everything. I love the look of everything. It's sets the story in a unique and interesting time and place. I want to see what will happen next.

 

Even DRAGNET has a Nazi spin to it. Good gag.

Seems the Furher (yes, THAT Furher) is dying and his successors (Gorhing and Himmler) are fighting for power and will destroy the world to be the winner of the power struggle. Oh, the Nazis have the bomb and this is what changed history as we know it.

It's interesting watching how America has been carved up. Everything west of the Rocky Mountains is Japanese controlled. Everything East belongs to the Reich. They don't even mention Canada. We all know that is because Canada wouldn't have taken that shit from either of those murderous ideologies.

Who is the Man In The High Castle? The one who made the films showing the TRUE HISTORY of the world - the world we know. Why would he do that? Unless of course this world was a simulation and the Man In The High Castle knew this because he was the one who created it in the first place. Dick liked to do a mind fuck on people in his work and I am expecting nothing less than this to be the case again.

There is even a rebellion trying to fight the Nazi menace which is as brutal and efficient as anything that Germany achieved. They are terrorists in the new 'order' and like all terrorists they must be exterminated. This is something both the Reich and the Japanese Empire do very well. That kind of suspicion and paranoia hang over everything. It's like Nazi Mad Men.

Rufus Sewell is very good as the evil Obergruppenführer John Smith. He wants to know the secret of the films as well and will use all the Nazi machinery at his disposal to get the answers he needs.

 

There are ten episodes to get to the end of the story. I hope they can keep me interested that long. Lots of old time phones ringing is going on like in the MATRIX so I am thinking a supercomputer connection. This show plays like a 50s Cold War drama by it's production design. The clothing and vehicles are from that time. Technology seems frozen in one place and time. Someone or something is testing humanity with a carefully crafted simulation. Or at least that is my theory this second.

 

Now I could be wrong but 2 episodes in I see a purpose. Maybe the Man In The High Castle can access or looking into other worlds and found ours, recorded what he saw and released the truth into his world to either change it or spread chaos. I am not sure yet. But it's going to be a weird reveal when it happens. Or I HOPE it will be. Damn it had better be. Anyways, on to another episode. I needs me a dense binge. to focus on.

Set in 1962, fifteen years after an alternative ending to World War II the novel concerns intrigues between the victorious Axis Powers—Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany—as they rule over the former United States, as well as daily life under the resulting totalitarian rule. The Man in the High Castle won the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1963.
