"Then again, maybe one of us won't."
That is just some funny shit. I will also argue to the DEATH anyone who tries to tell me that this wasn't Warren Oates best role. He's 'Uncle Hulka' for Christ's sake.
I so totally remember when I saw this movie. I was at the 6 week summer course for athletic leadership at Borden Ontario for air cadets. I was 16. We hadn't had a break in two weeks and we just got paid and had two whole days free.
The previous weekend we were on survival training. That is where Ian Box stole my socks (best name for a Dr Seuss book EVER) and still won't admit he took them to this day. EVERYONE knows you did it, Boxey, so confess before you get sent to hell for your evil deed ya idjit!
"They weren't taken by a fox or hidden under some rocks. They weren't secured in a trunk with locks or given to a hobo who had the monkey pox. No matter how sweet he talks, just look where he walks. Because those socks, yes my socks, were stolen by Box."
Aside from sleeping in I had no other plans for those days off. However, that Saturday night everyone in our platoon went to see this movie and bonded like criminals after a group escape. There was nothing we wanted to do more than imitate that gun drill performance they did in the middle of the movie. Cadet camp was the best times. How come we never got to test the army's newest recreational vehicle in Italy? It was a rip-off I tell ya.
Three of my buddies and I used to sing songs to our very cute Sgt. We called ourselves 'Brockman's Beatles' and one of us would ask her to marry us every lunch time. You had to do it with sincerity and a different way every time it was your turn. We sang 'Yesterday' outside her window one night. She called the MPs on us but waiting until AFTER we were done. That is how I know she liked the attention.
I already have this whole scene committed to memory. This shows the best part of belonging to any movement like the army or cadets or girl scouts or young republicans for Satan. You just meet the most interesting kinds of people.
