Now There Are Five Words I Never Thought I Would See Together

Bradley Cooper is Rocket Raccoon

The rumor is true! The Silver Linings Playbook star is diving into Marvel Studios' expanding universe as the voice of Rocket Raccoon. Marvel made the announcement today and this means Cooper is heading into space with Chris Pratt as Peter Quill, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax and probably Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot. It was previously confirmed the team's first film will have Ronan the Accuser as the foe, too.

I actually like this idea very much. Brings great star power to one of my favorite properties and soon to be movie spectacular. Rocket is the heart and soul of the Guardians of the Galaxy and I am impressed that other creative people seem to get that point and are giving him the attention he deserves.

I was pulling for Jason Statham as Rocket Raccoon, but this sounds pretty promising.

Statham is too one note. A talking raccoon needs nuance.

Well I know there was speculation of Vin Diesel being Rocket Raccoon for a while, but I was resistant to that idea if only because his voice is too deep for someone as small in stature as Rocket and I think it might have come across as too contrary, like they would have gone too far with a "hey look, he's not the stereotypical cute talking animal!"

While Diesel would have been too deep, I think that Statham had the advantage of being both deep and fast.

That being said, I'll be interested in Coopers take on the character. I'm not too familiar with Rocket Raccoon's comic roots, so seeing him I imagine a very fast, whip sharp kind of voice with a bite of accent for characterization. I dunno.

On the Avengers cartoon he had an Irish type of accent. I am sure Cooper will earn his money working out a voice that fits.
