I Remember It Well

http://www.itsadansworld.net/

What started out so hopeful became a dark stain indeed. Well for some of the creators. Others have flourished as has the imprint of Image Comics, the home of the Walking Dead and Invincible and so many other great indie comic titles like Planetary. They have always been a champion of creator rights, always a sticky subject in the comic book industry.

At the time there was a lot of excitement about these artists leaving the top two comic companies and trying to make a go of it on their own. I am sure their is a long of creative re-imagining of the events surrounding those times because McFarlane is big on his own mythmaking.

I will watch because I lived those times and know them very well as a comic collector. These guys got lots of press in magazines like Wizard which was THE comic magazine of the time. If you read Wizard you knew all about Image and how it was created. Their 1994 year end issue even had Spawn on the cover - proving his huge popularity at the time.

Over the years those first few shaky issues that Image first put out do not hold up and I can' t think of a single memorable story arc. Most of the characters just seemed like retreads of Marvel and DC characters that already existed. Spawn was something fresh for a time but it was not a well written story though you can't argue with how much energy McFarlane threw into his 'creation'. He even got a major motion picture of his character released. It wasn't a success but was a memorable thing to follow at the time. The internet was in it's infancy at the time but I can remember watching the trailer online.
