I Got This Message From An Old Student Today And It Made My Year

Calvin (that's so weird to say, I need it to be Mr. Heighton). I admired you back in the day because you were one of the "cool" teachers. You had a sense of humor and you were quick enough on the draw that you couldn't be taken down. I'm glad I found you on FB. It seems to me that you've endured so much and yet remained so colorful. Eccentricity is a mark of brilliance.

Not to sound too corny, but that's really cool! I hope you remember this during your darker moments. You made a difference, man, how many people can say that?

Isn't that great! Who knows how many lives you've impacted over the years?

No teacher ever knows. Once I was bitching about the kids and the job and how they never appreciate anything and one of the old teachers listened then pulled out a tiny laminated note from his wallet. It was a thank you note from a student that ws the only thing he ever received like this in his thirty years. Then I understood that that wasn't the important part of the job.

Cool picture... You look like a badass!
I'm guessing you were tough but fair like the guy in Stand and Deliver.

Thanks. Funny you should mention Jaime Escalante. He is one of my teaching heroes. I love the movie and they got his personality totally right in the movie. I always show that movie to the kids too. Lots of good messages in that one.
