Dead At 89

Jerry Robinson, creator of the Joker passes away at age 89.

Another one of the good ones bites the dust this week. Robinson had much to do with the development of the Batman mythology in the 1940s. He, Bill Finger and Bob Kane were the three most important guys working on that character and his world. Everything we know today about Batman started with these guys though you would never get total agreement on what parts of the mythos each were responsible for.

If you are interested you can learn more about him by going HERE.

Robinson made a name for himself within the comics industry through his ground-breaking and, ultimately, career-defining work on the early Batman books of the 1940s. During this time, he created The Joker, arguably the greatest villain in comics history...if not pop culture in general. Although his contributions to the character were famously disputed by Batman creator Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger, most comics historians seem to agree with Robinson's account of the Joker's genesis. (He also played a crucial role in the creation of other iconic Batman characters ranging from Robin to Two Face). Later in his life, he became an avid crusader of cartoonist's rights while continuing to work on various projects within the industry that embraced him so. But these are merely biographical truths, facts that can't begin to touch upon the scope of what he achieved during his life. It's impossible to imagine the character of Batman without your mind moving to the Joker. They are irrevocably linked. The Joker was the template for all of the evil foes that followed in his footsteps, and not just within comics but encompassing all aspects of entertainment. We can thank Robinson for this.

"Bill" Finger, not Bob.

And say, could you consider turning off Blogger's Lightbox feature? It sometimes inhibits rather than enhances your posted photos and illustrations. It's a just a click behind the scenes. I turned it off on all my blogs after numerous complaints.

If you go to your Blogger dashboard, click SETTINGS and then click FORMATTING.

About halfway down the page it says, "Showcase Images with Lightbox" and the default setting is YES.

Change it to NO, then click SAVE SETTINGS at the bottom of the page and all will be returned to the way t was before. The nightmare will be over. Sigh.
