Original Movie Trailer - Dune (1984)

In continuation of DUNE WEEK here at the Cave of Cool, we present the original movie trailer for the David Lynch picture.

I remember seeing this trailer and basically wetting my pants but I didn't read the book until after seeing the movie. I had hated many movies based on books I had read and I somehow knew that this one would be special in my life. I love the movie and have sat beside people in the theater who I knew and who just never got it.

It is my favorite book and the one I have read more than any other. I usually only read a book once but this story is so layered and so beautiful that you need multiple trips through it to get at all the fantastic political manipulations and environmental messages it contains.

I understand that a new feature length movie is in the works and I am exited to learn more about that.

Have you read all F. Herbert's Dune books? Which did you like best? My second favorite is the fourth: "Dios Emperador de Dune".

I live the first four the best beause it really brings the Atredies family story full circle. I haven't read beyond them but I have the audio books of Chapterhouse Dune and Heretics of Dune which are the last two the master wrong himself. I have hear the prequels written by his son are terrible so I plan to avoid them.

But to me that first novel will always be special.

Yes, I read one prequel and had a hard time forgetting about it. I really love Lynch's movie, but it could have been so much better with a different editing.

I loved the first one, was disappointed by the second but thought he redeemed himself with the third.

I haven't read any beyond that. I bought my daughter the later books but she hasn't cracked them yet either. When she does we will likely read them together.

I am so jealous. I would import a kid from some Ukranian orphanage if I could find one to share my love of Dune with.

And yeh, the 'Paul brings the rains to Arakkis' ending is just wrong. He became fricken' Emperor of the known Universe. Wasn't that enough of a happy ending for ya?

Let's kill all the worms and destroy the ONE thing we got going for us (the spice). How Herbert never thought of that first (or the sound weapons which I don't mind at all - the film and book are full of all kinds of weird sf tech) is beyond me. You don't need to improve on the master's work, David.

It ain't broke so don't fix it.

I kind of enjoyed God Emperor of Dune, just 'cause it was kind of finished a few things and was a good read.
