Mignola is a master of light and dark. It's not about what he hides, but what he decides to show you. There is always just enough reveal behind the black to set the mood - a mood which is often dark and ominous. These images are more often than not, the dark side of the fairly tales we think we all know.

The last one is especially fab.
Mignola is my all time favorite as well. Hellboy and the companion BPRD series are my desert island comics. If I had to give up reading everything I would stick with the books taking place in the universe he has created. Life altering stuff, honestly.
