Mike The Headless Chicken

Stacey Says is a great site that highlights some of the best and bizarre found on the Internet. Today she told the tale of 'Mike - The Headless Chicken'.

This was great for me to see because on the FIRST DAY that I went on the Internet I saw this story. My Internet provider had a fun site that they used as an introduction to the net and this was the story at the top for that day. Needless to say I was hooked. From Stacey's post:

"In September of 1945, Mike's owner went to chop his little chicken head off so as to prepare him for a lovely home cooked meal but something went terribly wrong! Mike shook off the blow, ran away, and never looked back. He then went on to live rather healthily for EIGHTEEN more months!!!!

HEADLESS!!!!

They figured out that what had happened was, the axe blade had missed his jugular vein and a clot had prevented him from bleeding to death. Most of his brain stem and one ear was left on his body - since most of a chicken's reflexes are controlled by the brain stem, Mike was able to remain quite active and healthy. And with an eyedropper, his owner was able feed him grain and water. What a life!

And guess how he eventually died?

He choked on a corn kernel!

The irony!"

Wow. I remember Mike from an old Art Bell show. Never thought it was real.

Oh crap, Art Bell's radio show. I should do a post about the time I was lost in the country at night while listening to a show he did about people who record ghost voices. He played those recordings and I have never been more frightened in all my life.
