This is off-topic, but I gotta say, I know why I love Tucson. The President showed up for a memorial for the shootings, and Tucson, thankfully, had the class to have a native American give the opening invocation-blessing. A member of the Yaqui tribe did the 4 directions, sky, earth blessing with eagle feathers. And he looked great. Picture Chief Dan George but heavier, kinda. There was 14,000 inside the arena, and about another 10,000 in the stadium. The President did a great speech too. Tucson has always been the center of rationality in AZ.
I just had a chance to watch the President's speech too. Before now I had only heard excerpts. I thought it was wonderful. Perfectly written, perfectly delivered, and at precisely the tone the occassion warranted.
You describe it as "Adult", Cal, and I agree. I'll even go you one better: It was PRESIDENTIAL. It embodied what I expect from the Commander in Chief of my nation, yet often fail to get - regardless of who is in the office.
The speech doesn't in any way alter my opposition to many (most) of the President's policies and objectives. However, it went a long, long way toward moderating how I view him as a person.
I am a big fan of Obama and I admit that times I have feel let down by him. Yesterday I was reminded how glad I am that he is President. I believe he is playing the long game and when he wins his second term I suspect he will do many transformative things that you will all benefit from. Hearing that you are open to changing your opinion about him give me hope.
I forever stand vigilant to protect this planet from the myriad of forces that are always against us. Be it the octopus, zombies, aliens or the robots my team of human agents, and our feline allies, circle the globe in a never ending struggle for human freedom.
I learn all I can on every subject that interests me. I especially enjoy ancient history because in the past there are valuable lessons to be found. Also, if I ever get my time machine to work properly, it would be good to know a bit about possible destinations and what to expect when I get there.
I greatly appreciate beautiful design. Be it manufactured or found naturally I am fascinated by the process of invention. I am attracted to the unique, the strange, the haunted. I like to share what I find on this blog.
And not let us forget the 'Cephalopod Menace' who, if allowed to, would wrap their tentacles around all that is good and pure in this life and crush it until it remained no more. They are creatures of pure spite. Hate is all they know. Death is all they do. They are our most ruthless and determined enemy.
So we fight. Selena has the celebrity contacts, the cat is ruthless and without pity, Roosevelt's ghost has the experience and I do the wetwork.
Fighting for the future of the planet doesn't have to be a chore, however. We can take the time to appreciate all that is cool in this world even as we cut the octopus into bite sized chunks.
This is the reason there has always been and must forever be, a Cave of Cool. Be sure to wipe your feet before you enter.

That last pic is where I want to hang out and just suck it in, like a hobbit.

Center of rationality.... OK, but sorry to say though, there was a lunatic skulking in the desert.
I have been listening to his speech just now. How great a leader he is to NOT try to make political points like he could have. That is an ADULT.
I agree.
The fourth picture almost looks like you'd be entering Shangri-La, where you could live forever. Which would be nice.
I'm diggin' on those last two pics, alot.

Here's the Yaqui blessing at the memorail service. He was kinda nervous but this is very cool.
